増井の作品は繊細で細密な水彩画です。紙に水彩で下地を塗り、時間をおいてから何度も重ねて描かれる画面には、滲みによってできる偶然の効果と意図的で入念な描線によって独特のテクスチュアがつくりだされます。幼い頃の色や匂いの記憶と共に増井が身近な存在として観察してきた猫や馬、鳥などは、作品のなかで背景と有機的に統一し、まるで神話のなかの動物のような象徴的な存在として描かれています。
森美術館チーフ・キュレーター片岡真実氏は以下のように語ります。「増井淑乃は抽象的な風景を描いた水彩で知られているが、そこには神話的な物語性や模様や装飾などの伝統も見ることができる。彼女の絵画空間に登場するネコや馬などの動物は、増井の空想世界を自由に動き回っている。」（片岡真実「MASUI, YOSHINO」 『Younger Than Jesus: Artist Directory』 Phaidon/New Museum出版、2009年）
故郷での体験や神話から着想を得て紡ぎ出された作品は、見る者に郷愁を感じさせます。本展覧会では静岡の駿府博物館での個展「海は見えるか」出展作を中心に、新作を含む約20点を展示いたします。是非ご高覧ください。
増井淑乃は1976年静岡県焼津市生まれ。静岡県立清水南高校芸術科に進学後、多摩美術大学美術学部芸術学科で東洋美術を研究、現在東京を拠点に活動を行っています。芥川賞作家である磯崎憲一郎のデビュー作『肝心の子供』（第44回文藝賞受賞/ 2007年、河出書房新社主催）の装画となった他、世界中のキュレーター、批評家によって推薦された1975年以降生まれの作家を紹介した書籍『Younger Than Jesus: the Artist Directory』に、片岡真実氏により選出、掲載されています。小山登美夫ギャラリーでは2006年、2008年、2011年、2013年と4度の個展を行っており、2016年1月には駿府博物館にて個展を開催しました。
「猫と問い 猫とこたえて 猫は寝るらん」
理由はわからないけれど、子供のころから馬が好きだ。できることなら馬小屋で描きたいけれど、そうもいかない。猫がいる。
自由に歩き回れない環境で育った猫だから、物を避けるという考えはない。行きたい場所があれば、私の顔だろうがなんだろうが構わず踏んでいく。困ったものだけど、生い立ちをおもうと不憫で叱れない。将来虎になるというなら別だけど、猫のままだろうし、まあいいか。
私の周りを好むので、制作机の上、右手で描いて左手が猫に届く場所に、座布団や毛布が置かれた。
そして、「またやられた」。
目を離した隙に、筆洗をこねくり回して、紙の上を歩いたようだ。水染みと色はげを置き土産に、ベランダの陽だまりでヒゲのお手入れと洒落こんでいる。
猫は、絵に描いた鳥が飛ばない、犬が吠えないことを知っている。何も起こらないものに何をしても、別に腹が減るでもなし。
私としては、何も起こってほしくないのに何か起きたのだから、たまったものではない。
ただ、こうも考えてみる。
手探りで進んでいくと、同じ場所から出発しても、1回1回違った道をたどる。こうやって毎回、違った目的地に着くほうが面白い。たとえ猫の手を借りてでも。
かれこれ10年あまり、こうやって猫と描いてきた。
もしかして、本当は猫が描いているんじゃないか。
作品の意図とか目的とかを聞かれると、いつも困ってしまう。なぜ、すべてをつまびらかにしようとするのだろう。ひとつにしようとするのだろう。
そうだ、事実猫が関わっているのだから、いっそこうこたえるのはどうか。

Masui’s works are delicate and finely detailed watercolor paintings. After first applying a watercolor undercoating to the paper, she then builds up paint in layers on the picture plane, and creates the unique textures of her works through a combination of the effects of seeping blurs of the paint soaking into the paper, and her scrupulously careful application of line. Memories of the colors and the smells of her childhood, together with the cats, horses and birds that were in intimate proximity to her, co-exist organically on the backgrounds of Matsui’s paintings, as though these animals depicted therein are the symbolic creatures of myth.
The Mori Art Museum Chief Curator Mami Kataoka has written, ‘With watercolor on paper, she creates abstract landscapes that reference mythological narrative alongside traditions of pattern and decoration. Yoshino Masui was born in 1976 in Yaizu, Shizuoka. She studied Oriental Fine Art at Tama Art University and is now based in Tokyo. As well as creating the cover design for the Akutagawa Prize-winning author Kenichiro Isozaki’s début work The Crucial Child (winner of the 44th Bungei Award in 2007, sponsored by Kawade Shobo Shinsha), she was also proposed by Mami Kataoka to be published in the book The Younger Than Jesus Artist Directory, in which curators and critics throughout the world nominate their recommended artists born after 1975. Masui has held four solo shows with Tomio Koyama Gallery in 2006, 2008, 2011 and 2013 respectively, and in January 2016 she held a solo exhibition at the Sumpu Museum.
