8/ ART GALLERY/ Tomio Koyama Galleryでは、現代日本のアーティストの展覧会シリーズとして、第一回目に桑久保徹展を開催致します。

 

桑久保徹は1978年、神奈川県座間市生まれ。2002年多摩美術大学絵画科油画専攻を卒業し、「トーキョーワンダーウォール賞」（東京都現代美術館、2002年）を受賞。その後、第三回絹谷幸二賞（毎日新聞主催、2011年）、VOCA奨励賞（上野の森美術館、2012年）など受賞し、2010年にはトーキョーワンダーサイト渋谷にて個展「海の話し　画家の話し」が開催された他、海外でもドイツ、デンマーク、韓国などで多数の個展を開催。また近年出展したグループ展に、「あざみ野コンテンポラリーvol.2　Viewpoints いま『描く』ということ」（横浜市民ギャラリーあざみ野、神奈川、2012年）、「アーティスト・ファイル 2010 現代の作家たち」（国立新美術館、東京、2010年）などがあります。小山登美夫ギャラリーでは、05年、08年と2度の個展を行っています。
 

「絵というものが現代美術では攻撃対象になることもあるけれど、それなら現代美術というのは一体何なのか。美術という名付けえぬもののはずが、どこか現代美術「的」な、言語無しでは理解しがたいものに偏っていはしないか。自分が美術をやっていく上で、（人に素直に喜んでもらえるような）自然な形を考えると絵だと思った」と桑久保は言い、印象派の画家のように海辺にイーゼルを立てて絵を描いたり、「絵を売り歩く放浪画家」としてパフォーマンスしたりと自分がイメージするいわゆる「職業画家」を演じてみることが、最初の制作のきっかけになりました。海のモチーフを多く用い、オイルを混ぜず、油絵具を分厚く盛り上げて描いていくという現代ではもはや古典ともいえる技法と、彼自身の現在の心象風景を重ね合わせて作品を作り上げています。今年の秋、ロンドンのThe Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundationにて個展を開催。（http://www.dajf.org.uk/exhibition/the-sea-by-night-and-day-by-toru-kuwakubo）それに続く本展でも意欲的な最新作を発表いたします。是非ご高覧下さい。

 

 

8/ ART GALLERY/ Tomio Koyama Gallery is pleased to present Toru Kuwakubo's solo exhibition as the first show of the young Japanese artist series to follow.

 

Toru Kuwakubo was born in Zama, Kanagawa in 1978. He graduated from the Oil Painting Department at Tama Art University in 2002. He won the Tokyo Wonder Wall Award sponsored by Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo in 2002. He also received the 3rd Koji Kinutani Prize by the Mainichi Newspaper in 2011 and VOCA Encouragement Prize sponsored by The Ueno Royal Museum in 2012, and has held many solo and group exhibitions both in Japan and abroad including Germany, Denmark and Korea. He has held solo exhibitions at Tomio Koyama Gallery in 2005 and 2008. 
 

"Painting can be subject to criticism in contemporary art but if so, what is contemporary art anyway? Art is naturally unnameable, but aren't there so many contemporary "looking" works that depend on language? In pursuing art, I thought painting was the natural form for me to appeal to people" says Kuwakubo. His artistic practice started with acting as a fictional "professional painter" as the impressionists setting an easel at the beach or as a "wondering painter" who peddles his work. The sea is often used as a motif in his paintings. Using a classic way of oil painting without mixing with extra oil, he paints thick layers of rich colors which combine with his imagined scenery. He has just held a solo exhibition at The Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation in London from September 12 until October 14.  (http://www.dajf.org.uk/exhibition/the-sea-by-night-and-day-by-toru-kuwakubo) His latest paintings will be on view at this exhibition.
