8/ART GALLERY/ Tomio Koyama Gallery (Shibuya Hikarie) is pleased to present “Kishio Suga - Photographs and Videos” introducing photographs and video works as well as documentary footage of the “activation (series)." Also, the film "Being and Murder "(1988-99) directed and written by Suga on the occasion of his solo exhibition at Yokohama Museum of Art will be screened on May 31, from 6:30 pm at 8/ COURT (Shibuya Hikarie). The talk event by Taro Amano (Curator in Chief/ Program Director of Yokohama Civic Art Gallery Azamino) who produced the film is given after the show.

In addition, the exhibition “Kishio Suga Expanded Self-Space"(May 25 - June 30, 2018) will be held concurrently at Tomio Koyama Gallery (Roppongi) featuring a selection of approximately 20 latest works by the artist. Furthermore, his metal sculpture is presented in the solo exhibition "Released Existence on Edges” (May 12 - July 4, 2018) at “THE CLUB” art gallery in GINZA SIX (Ginza).

Suga enables “things” and “things,” “things” and “space,” and “things” and “people” to connect, enclose and be interdependent on each other in different ways from how we usually perceive things to be in existence, thereby giving the impression of things as presenting new forms and even situations. Suga attempts to reveal the fundamental conditions and manner in which our world exists through a multifaceted approach that appropriates various means from three-dimensional works to two-dimensional works, photographs, and video to express that which we are “unable to see.” These series of exhibitions will serve as an invaluable opportunity to comprehensively encounter and experience the world of Suga’s work.

Born in Morioka city, Iwate Prefecture, in 1944. In 1968 he graduated from the Department of Painting of Tama Art University. While still a student in 1967 he won the 11th Shell Art Award. From his first solo show in 1968 until today, in a career spanning over 45 years, he has shown work in a vast number of exhibitions in Japan and abroad. Two major recent solo exhibitions in 2014 and 2015, ”Kishio Suga” at the Vangi Sculpture Garden Museum and ”Kishio Suga: Situated Latency” at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, ignited discussions about contemporary aesthetics. In the decades since he represented Japan at the 38th Venice Biennale in 1978, his international reputation has grown steadily. He has exhibited in many international exhibitions including “Japanese Avant-Garde 1910-1970” (Centre Pompidou, Paris, 1986), “Japanese Art After 1945: Scream Against the Sky” (Yokohama Museum of Art, Japan, before travelling to the Guggenheim Museum, New York), and “Requiem for the Sun: The Art of Mono-ha” (Blum & Poe, Los Angeles, 2012), to name only a few. He was the subject of major exhibitions at museums in Europe and the United States; a solo exhibition at Pirelli HangarBicocca in Milan, Italy (Sep. 29, 2016 – Jan. 29, 2017) ; a two-person exhibition with Karla Black at The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh (Oct. 22, 2016 – Feb. 19, 2017); and a solo exhibition at Dia:Chelsea in New York (Nov. 5, 2016 – Jul. 29, 2017). And this year, he is selected for the 57th Venice Biennale “Viva Arte Viva” Curated by Christine Macel (May 13 – November 26). His works are held in the collections of numerous museums within Japan including the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, and international institutions such as the Tate Modern, the Dallas Museum of Art, M+, the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, the Glenstone Foundation, the Pinault Collection and numerous others. In January 2016, he won the 57th Mainichi Art Award, one of Japan’s most prestigious cultural awards.
