ディエゴ・シンの作品は、衝突や、何か確立したものの中心がずらされていくような感覚を与えます。2006年から取り組んでいるデニムのシリーズでは、以前に展示されたペインティングがまるでデニムの騙し絵のように姿を変え、青、黒、白の絵の具で継ぎ目、ほつれ、穴が描かれます。そして本物のデニムがそうであるように、その裂け目の奥にあったものが見えてきます。それはまるでアーティストが「はい、いいえ、ありがとう」と言い続けているかのようで、否定しながらもある表現が提示されていき、またそこから別の物質性が立ち現れてきます。これらのペインティングがもつ終わりがないゲームのような感覚は、マルセル・デュシャンの最後のペインティング「Tu m’（お前は私を）」（1918年）に通じるものがありますが、「Tu m’」がペインティングという媒体から立ち去ることを目指したのに対し、シンは再度ペインティングへ入り直し、その実践を探求し直そうとしています。
本展ではこのデニムのシリーズの最新作を含めた15点ほどを展示いたします。
ディエゴ・シンはアルゼンチン生まれ。マイアミを拠点に制作、またマイアミとブエノスアイレスに拠点をもつキュレーション・プロジェクトである「Central Fine」を立ち上げました。本展は小山登美夫ギャラリーでは3度目の個展になります。デニムのシリーズやその他のテキスト、スクリブル（走り書き）などのシリーズは、「Table for One」（11年、小山登美夫ギャラリー）、「Unimodern Gondolieri」（12年、Various Small Fires、ロサンゼルス）、「Embarrassed by Loneliness」（12年、Mendes Wood、サンパウロ）、「Submarine Uploading」（12年、Annarumma Gallery、ナポリ）、「Locally Sourced」（15年、アメリカン大学美術館、ワシントンD.C.）、「Recent Acquisitions」（14年、ペレス・アート・ミュージアム・マイアミ）、「Prospect」（14年、サンディエゴ現代美術館）、「Le Ragioni della Pittura」（13年、La Fondazzione Malvina Menegaz、イタリア）などで展示されています。またシンの作品はサンディエゴ現代美術館、ペレス・アート・ミュージアム・マイアミ、 the De La Cruz Collection（マイアミ）などのパブリックコレクションとして収蔵されています。
Diego Singh’s works address the notion of decentralization while considering conflict and self-policing through negation. In his Denim series, started in 2006, previously–exhibited paintings are turned into a trompe l’oeil of denim, sporting seams, rips and holes meticulously painted over thin veils of blue, black or white pigment that allow, as denim does, for what lies behind it to partially come through. It is as if the artist is constantly saying, ‘Yes No Thank You’, and perhaps, by showing a body of work while denying it, another physicality emerges. These paintings’ no-end-game-attitude signal Tu m’ (Duchamp’s last painting, 1918), but they do so by re-framing Tu m’ s over-determination towards an exit from painting itself, and instead, propose a constant re-entering into the medium and a re-evaluation of the notion of praxis. This exhibition will feature new and recent works of the denim series.

Diego Singh was born in Argentina. He is the founder of Central Fine, a curatorial project based in Miami and Buenos Aires. “Yes No Thank You” marks his 3rd solo show at Tomio Koyama Gallery in Tokyo. Diego Singh’s denim, text, hinges and scribbles paintings were exhibited in solo exhibitions at “Table For One” at Tomio Koyama Gallery, Tokyo (2011); “Unimodern Gondolieri” at Various Small Fires, Los Angeles (2012); “Embarrassed by Loneliness” at Mendes Wood Gallery, Sao Paulo (2012); and “Submarine Uploading” at Annarumma Gallery in Napoli (2012). Works from these series where included recently in: “Locally Sourced” at the American University Museum in Washington DC (2015); “Recent Acquisitions” at the Perez Art Museum Miami (2014); “Prospect” at MOCA San Diego (2014); and “Le Ragioni della Pittura” at La Fondazzione Malvina Menegaz, in Castelbasso (2013). Singh's paintings are part of MOCA San Diego Permanent Collection, the Perez Art Museum Miami and the De La Cruz Collection, Miami, among others.
